Field Engineering Technician Lead

ICON is looking to add a Field Engineering Technician Lead to our Field Engineering team. A Field Engineering Technician Lead at ICON is a frontline technical leader responsible for overseeing the performance, growth, and alignment of the Field Engineering Technician team with ICON’s operational standards. This role combines technical mastery, operational oversight, and team leadership to ensure efficient, reliable, and safe field operations. The Lead works closely with engineers, print operators, and project managers, providing direct mentorship, guidance, and technical expertise while contributing to strategic organizational initiatives. The Lead is accountable for resolving the most complex technical issues, ensuring job site readiness, maintaining thorough documentation, and driving a culture of continuous improvement and safety.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Independently commission, troubleshoot, and maintain ICON 3D printers and related systems at the highest level of proficiency.
- Resolve complex technical issues, anticipate failures, and implement preventive solutions.
- Oversee site setup, staffing assignments, and preventive maintenance to ensure operational readiness.
- Ensure adherence to safety protocols, operational standards, and project requirements across all field sites.
- Directly supervise, mentor, and coach Field Engineering Technicians (I, II, and Senior) to develop technical expertise and operational excellence.
- Conduct performance evaluations, provide feedback, set development goals, and guide career progression.
- Coordinate onboarding and technical training for new technicians.
- Serve as the primary escalation point for technical and personnel challenges in the field.
- Maintain clear, consistent, and thorough documentation of field activities, troubleshooting processes, and lessons learned.
- Provide structured updates to leadership on field performance, challenges, and improvements.
- Facilitate cross-team communication between field technicians, engineering, and leadership to ensure alignment and information flow.
- Partner with engineering to review and implement Engineering Change Orders (ECOs) and new technology rollouts.
- Provide input on resource planning, operational strategies, and process improvements.
- Help define and refine best practices for field operations to drive efficiency and reliability.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
- 3+ years as a Senior Field Engineering Technician or in a comparable technical leadership role.
- Mastery PLCs, VFDs, hydraulics, and electrical systems.
- Proven ability to lead, mentor, and manage performance across a technical team.
- Excellent verbal and written skills with strong documentation practices.
- Comfortable managing shifting priorities in dynamic, field-based environments.
- Willingness to travel extensively, work in extreme environments, and be on-call as required.
- OSHA 10, CPR, and Telehandler (ICON will provide if needed).
PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS
- Experience leading field operations in large-scale industrial, manufacturing, or construction environments.
- Familiarity with resource planning, scheduling, and project management tools.
- Advanced troubleshooting and repair experience across multiple disciplines (mechanical, electrical, controls, hydraulics).
- Strong process orientation and commitment to operational excellence.
PHYSICAL / ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds safely and regularly.
- Comfortable working in various outdoor environments, including extreme temperatures (above 100°F or below freezing), sun, rain, mud, and areas with limited infrastructure (e.g., lack of electricity).
- Comfortable standing and moving on your feet for the majority of the workday as well as climbing ladders and carrying material buckets.
