ICON is seeking a Field Engineer II, a critical contributor responsible for solving escalated issues, performing advanced troubleshooting, and leading systemic upgrades of our construction and print systems. This role requires a proactive, experienced approach to problem-solving, strong communication skills, and the ability to mentor junior team members. In addition to troubleshooting, the Field Engineer II performs all print activities, including material QC testing, navigating Procore and print documentation, understanding print matrices, executing bond beams, and managing Y-rail setups. Operational discipline and a commitment to ICON’s standards are essential. This role is based in Austin, TX, and will require travel outside of the area for extended durations. This position reports to the Manager of Field Engineering.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Troubleshoot and resolve complex electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, and control system issues, including PLCs and VFDs.
  • Perform setup, installation, commissioning, and operation of print systems on-site.
  • Conduct repairs, calibrations, and preventive maintenance; manage parts inventory.
  • Inspect and review work of junior technicians to ensure quality and compliance.
  • Collaborate with sustaining engineering to address systemic issues and reduce downtime.
  • Maintain detailed printer logs and provide real-time updates on progress, issues, and resolutions.
  • Submit daily reports on downtime, performance metrics, and operational observations.
  • Conduct Root Cause Analysis (RCA) and Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA).
  • Develop and implement preventive maintenance plans and troubleshooting documentation.
  • Work with teams to plan systemic upgrades and drive reliability improvements.
  • Lead small teams and mentor junior technicians.
  • Make independent, strategic decisions in complex technical scenarios.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Manufacturing, Robotics, Automation, Aerospace Engineering, or equivalent.
  • 5+ years of experience in heavy machinery maintenance, production, or technical operations.
  • Proficiency in troubleshooting complex electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, and control systems, including PLCs and VFDs.
  • Experience with industrial-scale production machinery, sensors, and data systems.
  • Knowledge of part fabrication techniques (machining, welding, sheet metal, laser cutting, injection molding, 3D printing, hydroforming).
  • Demonstrated ability to lead small technical teams and mentor junior staff.
  • Strong communication, documentation, and data reporting skills.
  • Willingness to travel outside of Austin, TX, including extended stays and on-call, nights, and weekends.
  • Proficiency in English, spoken and written.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Technical operations coordination across departments.
  • Strong data communication and machine log analysis skills.
  • Advanced electromechanical and software aptitude.
  • Ability to make strategic, high-pressure decisions.

PHYSICAL / ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds safely and regularly.
  • Comfortable working in various outdoor environments, including extreme temperatures (above 100°F or below freezing), sun, rain, mud, and areas with limited infrastructure (e.g., lack of electricity).
  • Comfortable standing and moving on your feet for the majority of the workday as well as climbing ladders and carrying material buckets.
